This article contains the full list of National Universities Commission (NUC) approved Federal, State, and Private Universities in Nigeria. National Universities Commission started approving universities in 1963 to meet the global development both in academics and civilization.

National Universities Commission (NUC) itself was established in 1962 as an advisory agency in the cabinet office, then it later became a statutory body and appointed Prof. Jibril Aminu to be the first executive secretary in 1974.universities in nigeria

The main duty of the National Universities Commission is to grant approval for all educational programs conducted in Nigerian institutions, to also grant approval for the establishment of all higher academic institutions offering degree programs in Nigeria universities, ensuring standard assurance of all educational programs offered in Nigeria universities, and channel for all external support to Nigerian institutions.

This particular Commission has created about 12 Directorates which include:

How many universities are in Nigeria?

So far, NUC has accredited 218 universities, 49 Federal universities in Nigeria, 57 State universities in Nigeria, 99 private universities in Nigeria, and 13 Distance learning centers in Nigeria. These universities were established to help enhance the mental, moral and academic development of young and aged Nigerians and also foreigners.

Many of these universities today ranks among the best Universities in Africa. And also the number of students seeking admission into these universities is much that is the reason why the National Universities Commission (NUC) approved online institutions (Distance learning or E-learning centers) to help reduce the population of students being admitted into these On-Campuses.
