The major reason I decided to write on the topic was because I found out that there are certain misconceptions about polytechnics that offer nursing in Nigeria and so many people out there do not know about this misconception.
Therefore, this blog aims to clear the air of that misconception, offer clarity to readers, and guide them through the polytechnics that offer nursing in Nigeria.
Polytechnics are known for their practical courses, if you want to study electrical engineering, science lab technology, food science technology, etc. then you should consider going to a poly, as they are commonly referred to. This is because they are best at equipping students with practical real-world skills, unlike universities that do less practical and prepare students for administrative roles.
When you graduate from Poly, you will receive a National Diploma (ND) which takes only two years. After this, you could either decide to continue with Polytechnic for two more years and earn your HND then go for NYSC or stop tertiary education and start working, or apply for Direct Entry (DE) into a university and start from 200 level instead of 100 level. These are the options for you to explore if you decide to take the polytechnic education route.
Well, a lot of Nigerian students already have this knowledge about polytechnics and due to this, it is easy for them to believe that polytechnics in Nigeria offer nursing.
So, here comes the big question – Do polytechnics in Nigeria offer nursing?
The answer to that question is no, not yet. No polytechnic in Nigeria is offering nursing but the Government, together with the Ministry of Education, are considering approving polytechnics to offer nursing. So, till then there is no polytechnic with nursing in Nigeria.
Since there are no polytechnics in Nigeria what then is the need for writing this article, you may think. Well, there is still a need for it.
Although polytechnics may not offer nursing they offer nursing-related courses and if you are aspiring to become a nurse, you can use this route to study nursing either at a school of nursing or a university offering nursing, and this is how you can do it.
It is very hard to get into nursing school in Nigeria and it is the same for colleges of nursing and universities offering nursing. They are very competitive due to the amount of people applying each year. If you’ve been applying and not getting in, here is what you can do: You can apply for a nursing course at a polytechnic and graduate after two years with a National Diploma (ND) then apply to a university with nursing as Direct Entry (DE) and start from 200 Level.
Going with this route increases your chances of getting accepted into a university with nursing and this is because you have gained some experience from the nursing course you took while in Polytechnic. The admissions office will consider your direct entry application before those without experience.
This tip I have given you is something you will probably not see elsewhere, so read and read again to understand it better.
